八五六农场在发展旅游业中注重因地制宜，借助自然地貌开发建设，农场场部地势西高东低，西边是小山，东边有鱼塘，依山建起了青山公园，靠水建起了青山湖公园，两园间地势高低不平，是文化广场、步行街和休闲广场。自西向东形成了长2000米的休闲旅游区。青山公园山顶南侧陡峭的山崖上人工修建的瀑布，直泻池底，构成了一幅优美的图画。八五六农场是由铁道兵、转业官兵和知识青年开发建设的。为纪念他们，农场在青山公园上建起了17.5米高的拓荒者纪念碑，并在荷花池边立起了重10吨的知青纪念石。
一个外地游客说：“(到八五六农场)看了以后，确实大吃一惊，农场的小城镇建设确实是突飞猛进，“以人为本、搞和谐社会、生态建设非常好”。
另一个外地游客说：“八五六农场虽然小，但建设得非常好，整个场地和楼房建设很有规模，非常不错，你看着小湖多好，我们特意慕名来了，上这旅游”。
今年，八五六农场看准了采摘园这个休闲观光项目，在场部以北3公里处，投入200万元资金，建起了占地50亩的葡萄观光采摘园。为了提高效益，采摘园内还种植了辣椒、西红柿、西瓜、香瓜等蔬菜水果，游客可以到园内采摘，感受其中的乐趣。
采摘园技术员付国辉说：“这个园区成为集休闲、娱乐、观赏、采摘于一体的这样一个生态园区，将成为八五六及牡丹江分局的一个旅游的经济亮点”。
目前，八五六农场青山旅游度假区年接待游客数量已由不足千人增加到3万人，旅游收入超过300万元，已经跻身国家级农业旅游示范点行列，正朝着“生态旅游大场”迈进。

学校建筑包括语言与文学、数学、人文与社会、科学、技术、艺术、体育与健康七个学习领域教学楼，汇演中心、行政楼，以及师生生活设施。 语言与文学领域有容纳300人网上阅读的电子和文本阅览室，以及报告厅和设备先进的语音室。 数学领域有电子文本阅览室、多媒体教室，以及陈列着数学应用实例和数学模型的数学馆。 人文与社会领域有文史阅览室、电子图书馆、时事报告厅、天文台。 科学领域有常规实验室、物理探究实验室、电子阅览室、物理奥赛专用教室；化学学科设有四个探究实验室；生物学科设有植物组织培养室，在校园内还建有一个小生态园和小的生物走廊。 技术领域配有网络教室、演播厅、学校网络中心机房，以及装备电脑机器人、电子模版、汽车驾驶与保养、微型车床加工车间等用室。 体育与健康领域有一个配有标准400米塑胶跑道、可容纳三千名观众看台的田径场，一座面积为8,792.7平方米包括温水游泳馆、兵乓球馆、篮排球馆的两层体育馆。室外还建有十块篮球场地、五块排球场地和两块标准的网球场以及一个足球场和滑冰场等。 艺术领域有独立的艺术楼、标准的琴房，设有多媒体演播厅，并配有现代化的实验实习剧场，大、中型排练室，音乐合奏室，舞蹈教室，器乐演奏教室，美术习作室，摄影室、根雕室等，有专业的管弦乐排练厅，大型舞蹈排练厅，乐器设备种类齐全，数量充足。 各学习领域教室内设学习用品橱，教学楼的走廊预留了阅览资料、休闲的空间；领域教室除行政班教室外，预留了20%的教室做选修教室，为实施走班教学提供必要条件。 截至2015年2月，学校教职工359名，具有硕士研究生学历的教师123人，特级教师8人，高级教师144人，国家、省、市级学科带头人和骨干教师107人。
