【影評】《遺願清單》：當悲劇遇上喜劇（香港著名影評人）
有種說法是，最上乘的喜劇是將喜劇與悲劇的距離拉到最近。《遺願清單/玩轉生前事》做到了。這部講述兩個男性間的情誼的影片玩的是黑色幽默，藉由傑克·尼科爾森和摩根·弗里曼的表演，做出了搞笑又不惡俗的難得效果。

《玩轉生前事》（The Bucket List）的最大魅力，肯定是來自兩名男主角，傑克·尼科爾森 （Jack Nicholson）和摩根·弗里曼（Morgan Freeman）的演出。就跟他們的年齡一樣，兩人在影片里的表現，不獨不分伯仲、旗鼓相當，而且一唱一和、互補長短，一言一語、一舉手一投足之間，簡直就是高手過招、識英雄重英雄。所有最偉大的導演都會跟你說，演員是一部電影的命脈（是的，甚至包括了堅持不要演員「演出」，而導致他們表面看似「木口木面」的羅伯特·布列松〔Robert Bresson〕），因為是他們把劇本上沒有生命的文字，變成有血有肉的人物。

上世紀六七十年代，百老匯和好萊塢一度十分流行一種「扭計冤家」（oddcouple）式的處境喜劇（始作俑者是舞台劇作家尼爾·西蒙〔Neil Simon〕）—兩個性格南轅北轍的人物（通常是男性），被逼共處一室或合作完成一項任務，開始時水火不容，狗咬狗骨，最後終於做了難兄難弟。換言之，它的主題其實是男性間的情誼（male bonding），說不定還帶點曖曖昧昧的同性戀意味（戲謔成分佔多）。《玩》片可說是這個類型喜劇的繼承者：尼科爾森的艾華與弗里曼的卡特，一個是富可敵國的有錢佬，一個是出身自勞動階級的修車技工；一個狂妄任性，一個誠實忠直；一個結過4 次婚但卻連女兒也不肯相見，一個卻兒孫滿堂。艾華以為說服了卡特趁臨死前陪他盡情放縱一番的時候，卻其實是後者領著他走上了救贖之旅（救贖，是佔了八成以上的好萊塢劇本的指定主題）。So far so conventional（循規蹈矩）。
影片有趣的是它在題材（死亡）和形式（喜劇）上的對立。有說最上乘的喜劇是將喜劇與悲劇的距離拉到最接近。《玩》片里有一段戲，是兩名主角忍俊不禁捧腹大笑，最後笑到熱淚盈眶。作為觀眾的我雖未至於潸然淚下，但也未至於不無所感（尤其是到了結局）。羅傑·艾伯特（Roger Ebert），北美最流行的影評人，以自己患鼻咽癌的經驗出發，覺得影片跟末期癌症病人開玩笑，是不道德的行為。他大概忘記了在喜劇里有一種叫「黑色幽默」的手法，可以容許作者拿最不應該嘲弄的東西來調侃或戲謔一番。我覺得《玩》片在這層面上是成功的。你可以挑剔它不真實（兩人幾乎沒有所有癌症病人的形容消瘦和變化，也沒有太大的痛楚），但喜劇從來就容許誇張（它是放大了的現實）。影片惹笑，又不流於惡搞或惡俗，夫復何求？

《玩》片的導演叫鮑勃·雷納（Bob Reiner），電視演員出身，擅演喜劇，上世紀80 年代當上導演後，也擅拍喜劇，但其他的類型電影也有涉獵；可能沒有很強烈的個人風格或特色，但卻有著不錯的執行效率，總是頗能做到雅俗共賞的地步；最著名的作品有《搖滾萬萬歲》（This is Spinal Tap，1984，一部在今日已被推為經典的「仿搖滾音樂紀錄/ 喜劇片」）、《伴我同行》（Stand by Me，1986，史蒂芬·金第一部非恐怖類的電影佳作）、《90 男歡女愛》（When SallyMet Sally，1989）、《危情十日》（Misery，1990） 和《義海雄風》（A Few GoodMen，1992）等。但自上世紀90 年代後期開始，卻再也沒有很受注目的作品。從牌面上看，《玩》片本應可以是他的翻身之作。不過影片在美國本土的風評不好，大部分評論都不接受它的黑色題材。創作生涯類似鮑勃·雷納的導演，好萊塢有不少例子。也就是說，在一段輝煌的日子後，卻又忽然變得平平無奇，以致逐漸黯淡下來。究其原因，除了機遇難料外，我猜最主要的可能就是他們其實都只是執行者而非真正的作者（缺乏個人的視野和透視力），甚至在很大程度上很依賴（由片廠或經理人公司提供給他們的）劇本。於是風光過後，又或是一兩次錯誤的選擇後，人們都不怎樣能記得他們。

形成這樣的起伏可能還有另一原因：modesty（謙虛）。這是一個優點但也是缺點。因為modest，不好大喜功、不不自量力，所以競爭力較弱（相反例子有羅恩·霍華德Ron Howard），但也因為modest，所以恰如其分，平穩中見實力。《玩轉生前事》最能說明這個情況。正如前述，影片最吸引人的地方，就是兩名爐火純青的演員，劇本寫得工整嫻熟，對白生動，作為導演如果也爭著搶鏡，反而會造成破壞。雷納的好處，正是穩穩正正，但這卻不表示他什麼也不做——很多場戲表面上雖然好像只是平板地來回對剪，但分鏡卻相當准確利落。艾華與卡特由針鋒相對到同病相憐的那段montage（蒙太奇），便處理得經濟簡潔。影片的大部分場面都帶著這份從容的自信，兩個老鬼之間互相交戲時流露出來的那份sophistication（世故），不是老牌導演是不會拍得出這種味道的。

當然，這份低調與含蓄，放在今日，註定又會被譏為過氣、不合時宜。也罷，《玩轉生前事》給了我十分愉悅的97 分鍾，我是很心滿意足的。只要想想看，其實時下沒有很多的電影能夠做到這地步，你便可能會懂得appreciate（欣賞）它多一點
